Luxor International Airport (LXR) Information
(Luxor, Egypt)
Luxor International Airport is famous as the gateway to three of Egypt's most visited sights - the Valley of the Kings (just south of the city), the Avenue of the Sphinxes and the River Nile. Passenger throughput here now totals almost two million annually.
Formerly a somewhat dilapidated and often chaotic facility, Luxor Airport was totally revamped and updated in 2005 and is now ready to deal with over seven million travellers a year. For those whose international flights land in Cairo, there's a 45-minute domestic air shuttle service to Luxor.
Located to the east of the sprawling city, Luxor Airport is still the scene of confusion during the high season, but presents few problems to travellers during the rest of the year. Its carrier base is shared between low-cost airlines, holiday charter providers and several full-service airlines, including EgyptAir, Bahrain Air and Qatar Airways.
Seasonal and year-round direct flights are offered from major UK and European cities such as
London,
Manchester,
Birmingham,
Zurich,
Amsterdam,
Brussels,
Frankfurt and
Paris. The airport has two terminals, which are divided into domestic and international arrivals and departures halls, with passenger facilities available in both buildings. The newer International Terminal is set on three floors.

Cars
The route to the city centre from Luxor International Airport takes visitors along the east bank of the River Nile. This route often becomes crowded with traffic at peak times. Even so, the journey should only take around 15 minutes.
Buses
Local buses are the only public transport from the airport into central Luxor. They are inexpensive, although travellers will have to jostle for seats or be prepared to stand. By bus, the journey time is around 15 minutes.
Taxis
Taxis are available outside the International Terminal Arrivals exit, although the Arrivals hall is packed with noisy taxi touts fighting for business. Avoiding them and heading to the taxi rank is highly recommended.
